Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp decline on Friday as investor sentiment weakened following concerns over a below-normal monsoon forecast and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
The BSE Sensex plunged 1,092.06 points, or 1.44%, to close at 74,775.74. During the trading session, the index dropped as much as 1,278 points. The NSE Nifty also came under heavy selling pressure, falling 359.40 points, or 1.50%, to settle at 23,547.75. This marked the third consecutive session of losses for the benchmark indices.
The major trigger behind the fall was the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of below-normal southwest monsoon rainfall. The forecast raised concerns over agricultural output, rural demand, and possible food inflation in the coming months.
In India, the monsoon plays a crucial role in shaping economic activity, especially in rural areas. Any weakness in rainfall can impact crop production, consumption demand, inflation trends, and overall market confidence.
Selling pressure was seen across several major stocks. Power Grid, InterGlobe Aviation, NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, and Bajaj Finance were among the key laggards on the Sensex. However, select IT and engineering stocks such as Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Larsen & Toubro, and Infosys managed to end in positive territory.
Apart from domestic concerns, geopolitical uncertainty also weighed on investor confidence. Lack of clarity over the US-Iran ceasefire arrangement kept global investors cautious and added to the risk-off mood in the equity market.
Market experts believe that investors will now closely track monsoon progress, crude oil prices, inflation data, and global geopolitical developments. In such volatile conditions, analysts suggest that investors should avoid panic decisions and focus on disciplined risk management.
