Sensex and Nifty End Lower on Year-End Trading; Broader Markets Slump as Volatility Continues

On Monday, 29 December 2025, Indian equity markets closed on a weak note, with benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 ending in the red amid thin year-end trading volumes and sustained foreign fund outflows. The Sensex fell by around 346 points, while the Nifty slipped below the 25,950 level, extending the recent losing trend.

Market breadth favoured sellers, with more than 2,100 stocks declining on the NSE compared with over 1,000 advancing issues. The broader markets underperformed, as the Midcap and Smallcap indices posted steeper losses than the benchmark indices.

Sectorally, most indices closed in negative territory. IT, Auto, Realty, and Pharma stocks led the declines, while FMCG and Media stocks showed some resilience with modest gains.

Investors remained cautious ahead of the upcoming corporate earnings season, compounded by persistent foreign institutional investor selling and a weakening rupee in the currency markets. Calendar year 2025 saw robust IPO activity, with nearly 373 issues raising significant capital, making India one of the world’s most active IPO markets.

Analysts noted that with limited domestic triggers and subdued participation due to holiday trading, volatility dominated market sentiment, and range-bound movement is likely to persist as markets transition into 2026.
