Trump Announces Massive Tariff Plan for Generic Drugs to Boost US Manufacturing

Former US President Donald Trump has announced a new tariff policy aimed at encouraging pharmaceutical companies to shift generic drug manufacturing to the United States.

According to Trump's statement, all generic drugs imported into the US will continue to attract 0% tariff for the next two years, starting from August 1, 2026. After this transition period, the tariff structure will change significantly.

Key Highlights

  • 0% tariff on imported generic drugs for the first 2 years (effective August 1, 2026).
  • Tariff to increase to 100% for the following one year.
  • Thereafter, the tariff will rise to 200%.
  • Objective is to reshore generic pharmaceutical manufacturing to the United States.
  • Companies that do not establish manufacturing facilities in the US during the transition period could face significantly higher import costs.
  • The policy will not impact patented, branded, or innovative drugs, which will continue under the existing framework.

Trump stated that the policy is designed to encourage pharmaceutical companies to set up manufacturing plants and equipment within the United States, reducing dependence on overseas production and strengthening domestic pharmaceutical capacity.
