UPI May No Longer Be Completely Free!

UPI May No Longer Be Completely Free!

India’s UPI ecosystem could be heading for a major change. A proposal is being discussed to introduce a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) of around 40 basis points (0.40%) on certain UPI transactions. 💰

The interesting part? Banks could receive the bulk of this fee, potentially creating a new revenue stream from UPI.

📌 Why does it matter?

UPI has become India’s dominant digital payment system.

MDR could help banks and payment players recover some of the costs of running the ecosystem.

But the big question is: Will merchants ultimately bear the cost?

UPI’s biggest strength has been its low-cost, seamless experience. Any MDR could therefore change the economics of digital payments in India.

For now, it’s a proposal, not a confirmed universal charge. 👀
