India’s permanent UNSC seat bid gets backing from four European nations

India’s bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) received fresh support from four European nations: Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The countries, part of the Visegrad Group (V4), expressed support during the first V4-India foreign ministers’ meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár described India as a leading country of the Global South and an upcoming superpower in the Indo-Pacific region, stating that India should have a place as a permanent member of the UNSC.

The support strengthens India’s long-standing campaign for reforms in global institutions. India argues that the current UNSC structure does not fully represent today’s geopolitical and economic realities.

  • Supporting countries: Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
  • Group involved: Visegrad Group (V4), a Central European cooperation platform.
  • Main demand: Permanent membership for India in a reformed UN Security Council.
  • India’s argument: Greater representation for emerging economies and the Global South in global decision-making.
  • Strategic areas discussed: Technology, defence, connectivity, innovation and economic cooperation between India and V4 nations.
  • Challenge ahead: UNSC expansion requires broad agreement among UN member states and existing permanent members.

The backing from four European nations adds diplomatic support to India’s push for a permanent UNSC seat. While the endorsement highlights India’s growing international engagement, the final outcome depends on the wider UN reform process and negotiations among member countries.
