India’s energy exploration efforts have received a boost as ONGC discovered natural gas in a deepwater exploratory well in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, around 43 km off Odisha’s Konark coast. The discovery was made on September 18, 2026, under the Samudra Manthan exploration campaign. Gas was encountered at a depth of 1,441–1,452 metres, with the well showing encouraging flow and sustained reservoir pressure.
