India to Borrow ₹7.86 Lakh Crore in H2 FY27

India to Borrow ₹7.86 Lakh Crore in H2 FY27

The Centre has announced plans to borrow ₹7.86 lakh crore through government securities during the second half of FY27, from October 2026 to March 2027. The borrowing will be conducted through 23 weekly auctions, including ₹15,000 crore via Sovereign Green Bonds.

• H2 FY27 borrowing: ₹7.86 lakh crore

• Full-year borrowing: ₹15.99 lakh crore

• Budget estimate: ₹17.20 lakh crore

• Reduction: ₹1.20 lakh crore

• Fiscal deficit target: 4.3% of GDP

• Borrowing will include securities with maturities from 3 to 50 years.

The lower borrowing target reflects the government’s focus on fiscal prudence and debt management. It could also help reduce supply pressure in the bond market, although bond yields will continue to depend on inflation, RBI liquidity and global interest rates.
