India’s Auto Retail Sales Rise Strongly in 2025, Driven by Demand Recovery and Rural Growth

India’s automobile retail market recorded strong growth in calendar year 2025, with overall sales registering a healthy year-on-year increase, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The growth was driven by improved consumer sentiment, festive and year-end buying, tax rationalisation measures and rising demand across key segments including passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles. Dealers noted that government initiatives and attractive discounts encouraged buyers to advance purchase decisions.

December 2025 proved to be a particularly strong month, with retail auto sales posting double-digit growth compared to the same period last year. Passenger vehicles led the surge, followed by two-wheelers, while commercial vehicles also showed steady improvement.

A notable trend during the year was stronger demand from rural markets, which in several cases outpaced urban sales. Higher agricultural incomes, improved connectivity and growing aspirations in non-metro regions supported this momentum.

Dealers also reported better inventory management and faster stock movement, indicating a healthier supply-demand balance. Popular SUV and mid-size car models continued to see sustained interest from buyers.

Looking ahead, industry participants remain cautiously optimistic about 2026, expecting demand to stay resilient, supported by rural consumption, policy support and upcoming festive seasons, though some short-term volatility cannot be ruled out.
