Indian Markets End Lower Despite Positive Global Cues; Sensex Falls 376 Points, Nifty Slips Below 26,200

Indian equity benchmarks closed lower on Tuesday, trimming early optimism despite supportive global cues. The BSE Sensex declined 376 points, or 0.44 percent, to end at 85,063, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 72 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 26,179.

Market sentiment was cautious through the session as investors booked profits at higher levels. This came even after pre-market indicators, including the GIFT Nifty, signaled a positive opening, supported by gains across US and major Asian markets.

Sectoral performance remained mixed. Information technology, pharmaceuticals, PSU banks, and metal stocks managed modest gains, supported by selective buying. In contrast, infrastructure, media, oil and gas, and capital goods stocks faced selling pressure. Broader markets underperformed, with midcap and smallcap indices ending in the red.

Among Nifty constituents, Apollo Hospitals, ICICI Bank, HDFC Life, Sun Pharma, and Tata Consumer Products were among the top gainers. On the losing side, heavyweights such as Reliance Industries, ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, and InterGlobe Aviation weighed on the benchmarks.

Market experts attributed the decline to near-term consolidation following recent rallies, noting that domestic indices remain sensitive to stock-specific action and global developments. Investors are expected to track upcoming economic data, global market trends, and corporate earnings for further direction in the sessions ahead.
