Vodafone Idea Poised to Lose 3.5 Million Subscribers in Q3, Ending Nine-Month Trend of Narrowing Losses

Telecom operator Vodafone Idea (Vi) is expected to lose around 3.5 million subscribers in the October–December quarter (Q3), snapping a nine-month trend of narrowing user losses. The projected decline highlights the continued pressure on the debt-laden telco as competition in the Indian telecom market intensifies.

Industry data suggests the estimated Q3 subscriber loss is significantly higher than in recent quarters. Vi had reported a loss of about 1 million users in Q2 and smaller declines in the preceding quarters, indicating a temporary stabilisation that has now reversed.

In comparison, rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are likely to post strong net subscriber additions during the same period, supported by wider network coverage, better service quality, and aggressive customer acquisition strategies. The divergence underlines the widening gap between Vi and the market leaders.

While average revenue per user (ARPU) across the sector is expected to improve modestly, Vi continues to face financial and operational challenges. Its future performance will depend on faster network expansion, progress in 5G rollout, and successful fundraising to support long-term sustainability.

The sharp rise in subscriber churn in Q3 reinforces concerns over Vi’s competitive position in an increasingly consolidated telecom landscape.
