Indian stock markets opened lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Sensex and Nifty trading down early due to continued selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and rising uncertainty over global trade conditions.
The 30‑share BSE Sensex fell around 255 points, while the NSE Nifty dropped about 66 points in early trade. Major laggards included Tata Consultancy Services, Asian Paints, Maruti, Tech Mahindra and Infosys, although select stocks like ICICI Bank, Adani Ports and Hindustan Unilever saw modest gains.
Data showed FIIs offloading equities worth over ₹1,500 crore, even as domestic institutional investors bought stocks worth nearly ₹2,900 crore. Analysts said persistent foreign outflows and concerns about potential US tariff hikes were weighing on sentiment, despite positive macro indicators such as strong GDP growth projections for 2025‑26.
Market participants added that key support levels remain under pressure due to geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties, keeping investors cautious and risk appetite muted.
