Union Budget 2026 Likely on February 1 Despite Sunday: Cabinet Committee Sends Proposal

The Union Budget 2026 may be presented on Sunday, February 1, breaking the usual convention of weekday budget presentations. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) has proposed this date, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Along with the budget date, the committee has also suggested that the Budget Session of Parliament begin on January 28, 2026. If approved, Finance Minister is expected to present the full Union Budget on February 1, even though it falls on a Sunday.

Presenting the budget on February 1 has become a standard practice in recent years to allow sufficient time for parliamentary discussion before the start of the new financial year on April 1. Holding the session earlier also helps the government in smoother implementation of budget proposals.

While the proposal has been sent to the Cabinet, an official announcement is still awaited, and the final decision will be taken after approval by the Union Cabinet.

If confirmed, this will be another instance where parliamentary work continues despite the weekend, underlining the importance of timely fiscal planning for the country’s economy.
