India’s merchandise exports grew by 1.87% year-on-year to $38.5 billion in December 2025, reflecting resilience amid global economic uncertainties. Key export segments such as engineering goods, petroleum products, and chemicals contributed significantly to this growth.
Imports, however, grew at a faster pace, reaching approximately $63.5 billion, driven by higher purchases of crude oil, electronics, and gold. This resulted in a widened trade deficit of around $25 billion for the month.
Government officials remain optimistic, noting that if the current trend continues, India’s total exports of goods and services could exceed $850 billion in the fiscal year 2025-26, supporting the country’s broader economic growth targets.
Analysts highlight that while export growth is steady, managing imports and narrowing the trade deficit remain key challenges in the near term.
