Oil prices drop ~3% as Trump’s comments on Iran ease geopolitical fears

Global oil prices fell sharply on Thursday, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude both dropping about 3%, following comments by U.S.

President Donald Trump on the situation in Iran. Trump indicated that he had been informed killings of protesters in Iran were subsiding and that there were no immediate plans for military action, which helped ease market fears of a major supply disruption in the oil market.

Brent crude prices slipped to around $64.5–$64.6 per barrel, while WTI crude fell to $60.1–$60.2 per barrel. Analysts highlighted that traders were reducing the geopolitical risk premium that had been built into oil prices due to escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran over recent weeks.

In addition to geopolitical factors, larger-than-expected U.S. crude inventory builds added downward pressure on prices. While oil markets remain sensitive to Middle East tensions, the easing of fears temporarily stabilized trading and prompted a decline in crude prices globally.

Market watchers continue to monitor developments in Iran, U.S. foreign policy, and global oil supply-demand dynamics, noting that any sudden escalation could quickly reverse the recent price drop.
