India is close to finalising a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union, a deal that could become one of the most significant trade agreements for the country in recent decades. Officially known as the Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), negotiations have been ongoing for nearly 20 years and have recently gained strong momentum.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has described the proposed pact as the “mother of all trade deals,” underlining its economic and strategic importance. The agreement is expected to be a key agenda item during the upcoming India–EU summit, with both sides aiming to conclude negotiations at the earliest.
If signed, the deal will substantially lower trade barriers, improve market access for goods and services, and encourage greater investment flows between India and the EU. Indian sectors such as textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and IT services are likely to benefit significantly, while European companies could gain better access to India’s fast-growing market.
The agreement is also seen as strategically important for India as it looks to diversify its export markets amid rising global trade protectionism. Strengthening trade ties with the EU would help India reduce dependence on a few major markets and enhance its position in global supply chains.
Overall, the India–EU trade deal could reshape bilateral economic relations and play a crucial role in India’s long-term trade and growth strategy.
