Budget 2026: Govt May Introduce Fewer Income Tax Slabs Under New Tax Regime

Ahead of Union Budget 2026, discussions are gaining momentum around the possible simplification of India’s income tax structure. The government is reportedly considering a move towards fewer income tax slabs under the new tax regime, drawing inspiration from the simplified, GST-style framework.

At present, the income tax system has multiple slabs and rates, which many taxpayers find complex. A reduction in the number of slabs could make tax compliance easier, improve transparency, and reduce confusion among individual taxpayers.

Experts believe that a streamlined tax structure may encourage more people to opt for the new tax regime, while also improving compliance and efficiency. The focus is expected to be on creating a simpler and more predictable tax system rather than introducing major rate cuts.

While no official announcement has been made yet, expectations are high that Budget 2026 could bring meaningful changes to make the income tax regime more taxpayer-friendly. All eyes will be on the Finance Minister’s budget speech for clarity on proposed reforms.
