GIFT Nifty Signals Flat to Mildly Negative Start for Indian Markets

Indian equity markets opened on a subdued note on January 29, with key benchmark indices reflecting cautious sentiment amid mixed global cues. The GIFT Nifty futures indicator suggested a flat to mildly negative opening for the broader market, pointing to limited early upside for the Nifty 50 index.

At the opening bell, the Sensex was down around 248 points (about 0.30%) while the Nifty slipped roughly 60 points (0.24%), indicating tentative investor positioning in early trade. Around the open, approximately 1,334 stocks advanced, 1,070 declined, and 166 remained unchanged on the exchanges.

Market analysts noted that GIFT Nifty was signaling a start near 25,375, almost 75 points lower than the previous close, reflecting the cautious tilt among traders. Domestic technical indicators still offered underlying support, but overall market direction appeared likely to be driven by global equity trends, movements in crude oil prices, and institutional fund flows throughout the session.

Among early movers, major gainers included stocks such as L&T, Hindalco, ONGC, Coal India and JSW Steel, while key laggards were Maruti Suzuki, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Titan Company, Asian Paints and Interglobe Aviation. Sectoral performance was mixed, with buying interest emerging in select heavyweights even as broader sentiment remained tentative.

Market participants will be watching global developments and domestic cues closely as the session progresses, with emphasis on trends in institutional flows and technical support levels to assess the near-term trajectory.
