In the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament, the opposition **Congress Party has raised serious concerns after a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi surfaced in documents recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice, widely dubbed the Epstein files.
On Monday in the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manickam Tagore moved an adjournment motion demanding a full discussion on the mention of the Prime Minister in one of the emails allegedly connected to late financier Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender whose files — including emails, travel logs and other material — were published late last month.
The email in question reportedly refers to Mr. Modi’s official 2017 visit to Israel and mentions meetings involving the Indian Prime Minister and the then U.S. President. Congress leaders argued these references have now gone viral internationally and could impact India’s global image, moral standing, and constitutional credibility, urging the government to clarify and verify the authenticity of the files.
Congress figures including KC Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh have publicly demanded that Mr. Modi “come clean” on the disclosures and answer whether there was any interaction or contact between him or Indian officials with Epstein or his associates.
However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has firmly rejected the allegations. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the reference as “little more than trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal” and emphasized that aside from the Prime Minister’s official visit to Israel, there is no credible evidence of any direct link or improper engagement.
Domestic political reactions have intensified, with critics across parties debating the implications of the files and calling for transparency, while the government maintains that the reports are baseless and should be dismissed outright.
