RBI MPC Meet Begins: Repo Rate Likely on Pause, Economists Expect Status Quo on Policy Outcome NEWS ARTICLE:

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has started its bi‑monthly meeting amid strong market focus on the future of interest rates. With the policy outcome slated to be announced on Friday, economists and market participants are watching closely to see whether the central bank will announce another repo rate cut or keep rates unchanged.

The six‑member MPC, led by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, began deliberations against a backdrop of supportive macroeconomic factors — including robust growth indicators, inflation remaining below the target range and improved market sentiment following recent policy developments.

Some experts believe another rate cut may be possible, but the overall consensus in several polls and analyst views leans toward a repo rate pause after cumulative easing in recent months.

Most economists expect the central bank to maintain the repo rate at its current level of 5.25%, with the monetary stance remaining broadly neutral.

While inflation has stayed below the RBI’s medium‑term target, uncertainties around growth and economic data revisions have reinforced expectations of caution.

Liquidity management and bond market stability are also seen as key areas of focus for the RBI’s policy decisions this week.

The RBI had last cut its policy rate by 25 basis points in December 2025 after a series of earlier reductions, bringing the total easing over the past year to 125 basis points. Analysts say any further easing will depend on fresh economic data and risks to growth, with many preferring to assess the full impact of past cuts before moving further.
