India–US Finalise Framework for Interim Trade Deal, Tariff Cuts to Boost Indian Exports

India–US Finalise Framework for Interim Trade Deal, Tariff Cuts to Boost Indian Exports

India has prepared a new formula for an interim trade agreement with the United States, a development expected to significantly strengthen bilateral trade and open fresh opportunities for Indian exporters.

The proposed deal aims to provide greater access to the $30 trillion US market, particularly benefiting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), farmers, and fishermen.

According to sources, the agreement will allow the United States to reduce tariffs on a wide range of Indian products to 18 percent, making Indian goods more competitive in the world’s largest economy. Key sectors expected to gain include textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber products, organic chemicals, home décor, handicrafts, and select machinery.

A major highlight of the framework is the complete elimination of tariffs on generic medicines, gems and diamonds, and aircraft components. This move is expected to substantially boost India’s export strength while reinforcing the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

In addition, India is set to receive special concessions such as tariff relaxations on aircraft parts, tariff quotas for auto components, and negotiated benefits for generic medicines.

These measures are expected to drive higher exports in strategic manufacturing sectors and enhance India’s position in global supply chains.

Officials believe the trade agreement will not only increase exports but also lead to the creation of millions of new jobs, particularly for women and youth, driven by expanded production and international demand.

The interim deal marks an important step in deepening India–US economic ties and strengthening India’s global competitiveness amid evolving international trade dynamics.
