Sensex Ends Flat, Nifty Holds Above 25,950 as IT Stocks Lag; Auto & Healthcare Shine

Indian equity benchmarks ended a choppy Wednesday session on a muted note with mixed sectoral cues, as investors navigated mixed global signals and fresh quarterly earnings.

The benchmark BSE Sensex closed largely flat, while the NSE Nifty50 edged up modestly, maintaining the key 25,900‑plus level after early positive cues from GIFT Nifty.

Sensex slipped slightly to finish near 84,233 levels, down marginally from the previous session, breaking a three‑day winning streak. Nifty50, by contrast, posted a small gain, settling around 25,954, supported by strength in auto and healthcare counters.

Sector & Stock Highlights

  • Auto & Healthcare Lead: Auto names and healthcare shares outperformed, with State Bank of India rallying over 3% and overtaking some large caps in market capitalization. Broader market midcap and smallcap indices showed modest gains.
  • IT Sector Lag: Information technology names, including TCS and HCLTech, weighed on the indices, reflecting continued pressure on global tech stocks and sectoral rotation among investors.
  • Mixed Global Cues: Asian markets generally traded higher in early sessions, mirroring positive sentiment from GIFT Nifty futures, but U.S. markets closed mixed with weaker retail sales data tempering optimism.

Market Drivers

Broader appetite for equities was underpinned by a renewed sense of stability in foreign institutional investor flows and ongoing corporate earnings.

Technical analysts noted that Nifty’s ability to hold above its 25,800‑plus support zone could pave the way for upside towards the 26,100–26,300 range if buying interest persists.

Sectoral rotation remained a theme as metals, autos, and financials drew interest ahead of more corporate results and key macroeconomic data due later this week.
