Online Bus Bookings Surge 25% in 2025 as Road Travel Rebounds Strongly

Online bus ticket bookings in India recorded a significant 25% year-on-year growth in 2025, according to industry data highlighted by executives from redBus — one of the country’s leading digital bus travel platforms.

The growth trend reflects a broader revival in intercity road travel across the country, driven by increased digital adoption, improved road connectivity, and rising comfort expectations among travellers.

Between April and September 2025, intercity buses — both booked through digital platforms and in the wider industry — carried more than 140 million passengers, marking a strong rebound in long-distance travel demand.

Industry reports show that rising online penetration is not just limited to metropolitan areas; smaller towns and tier-2/3 cities accounted for a large share of bookings, underscoring a deepening reach of digital ticketing services beyond urban centres.

The growth was accompanied by a sturdy ticketing value, reflecting not just volumes but also rising average fares — as more travellers opt for comfort-oriented services such as AC and sleeper buses.

According to travel industry analysts, the surge in online bus bookings highlights evolving travel preferences among Indians, who are increasingly choosing organised and digital modes of road transport over traditional offline channels.

The trend also augurs well for ancillary services including last-mile connectivity and travel planning integration with broader mobility platforms.

As demand continues to grow, operators and booking platforms are expected to expand services, improve digital experiences, and tap deeper into rural and non-metro segments to sustain the upward trajectory in bus travel.
