Tata Group and OpenAI Forge Strategic AI Partnership to Build Data Centre Infrastructure and Accelerate AI Innovation Globally

In a major move for India’s technology landscape, the Tata Group, along with its technology arm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has entered into a multi-dimensional strategic partnership with OpenAI aimed at advancing artificial intelligence innovation both in India and worldwide.

Unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the collaboration includes plans to build large-scale AI infrastructure in India beginning with a 100-megawatt AI data centre, with an option to scale up to 1 gigawatt of capacity over time — positioning the nation as a competitive global AI hub.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will become the first customer of TCS’s AI data centre business, marking a significant development in local compute capacity for AI workloads.

Beyond infrastructure, the partnership will focus on:

  • Deploying Enterprise ChatGPT across thousands of Tata Group employees to boost innovation and productivity.
  • Joint development of industry-specific AI solutions that combine OpenAI’s technology with TCS’s sector expertise.
  • Initiatives to upskill Indian professionals and youth with AI training and resources.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the alliance will help build AI “with India, for India, and in India,” reinforcing India’s role in shaping the future of AI technologies.

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran described the collaboration as a “milestone” in India’s vision to become a global AI leader, with potential to transform industries and empower the workforce for the AI era.

The announcement comes amid rising global competition in AI infrastructure, with India attracting significant investments from both domestic and international technology players.
