Coal India Confident of Meeting Summer Power Demand With 115 MT Stock and Strong Supply Buffer
India’s largest coal producer, Coal India Ltd, has assured it is fully prepared to meet the anticipated surge in coal demand during the upcoming summer months. The company says it currently holds about 115 million tonnes (MT) of coal at its pitheads, with additional stocks available across thermal power plants and transit points, providing a robust supply cushion ahead of peak electricity usage. According to officials, Coal India’s three-layer coal buffer system — comprising pithead inventory, coal held at domestic coal-based power stations, and transit stock in goods sheds, washeries, and ports — gives total ready availability of around 175.5 MT. This level is expected to comfortably support rising power generation needs as temperatures climb and demand for cooling appliances increases. Coal stocks at thermal power plants themselves are also at record levels for this time of year. Combined with in-situ coal exposure already uncovered and ready for extraction, the company says there is no immediate risk of coal shortage. Rising domestic coal supplies could also help reduce reliance on costly imports, particularly as global coal prices trend upwards. Coal India’s preparedness is seen as crucial since coal-fired generation still forms the backbone of India’s electricity mix, especially during hot summer months when demand peaks sharply.
