India ‘Tough Nut to Crack’: US Trade Representative Flags Challenges After 3-Day Trade Talks

The latest round of high-level trade negotiations between India and the United States has concluded in Washington, highlighting both progress and persistent challenges in finalizing a bilateral trade agreement.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described India as a “tough nut to crack,” emphasizing the complexity of negotiations, particularly around sensitive sectors like agriculture.

A 12-member Indian delegation, led by senior commerce officials, engaged in three days of intensive discussions with US counterparts. The talks focused on advancing the first phase of the proposed trade deal, which was initially announced earlier this year as part of efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

One of the key sticking points remains India’s long-standing protection of its agricultural markets. According to US officials, India aims to safeguard domestic industries, while the US is pushing for greater market access and reduced trade barriers.

Despite these challenges, both sides acknowledged areas of potential agreement, particularly in sectors like livestock feed, energy-related products, and certain commodities. Negotiators remain optimistic about finding common ground in the coming rounds.

Recent updates suggest that discussions have been “positive and productive,” with the deal nearing completion, although a few critical issues still need resolution.

The broader goal of the agreement is to boost bilateral trade, improve market access, and strengthen cooperation across key sectors such as technology, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.
