India’s business activity showed signs of moderation in December, with the latest HSBC Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) indicating a slowdown in growth across the private sector.
The HSBC Composite PMI slipped to 58.9 in December from 59.7 in November, marking the softest pace of output growth since February. Although the index remained well above the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction, the data suggests that growth momentum eased toward the end of the year.
Both the manufacturing and services sectors witnessed a slowdown, with growth in new orders moderating. However, overall demand conditions stayed resilient, supported by continued customer interest and steady domestic consumption.
Analysts noted that the easing reflects a cooling in economic momentum, even as the private sector continued to expand at a healthy pace. Business confidence softened slightly, indicating a more cautious outlook among firms.
As the economy moves into the new year, companies are expected to closely monitor demand trends, cost pressures and global economic developments, which could influence growth prospects in the coming months.
