Sensex Crashes 983 Points, Nifty Slips Below 23,900 as IT Sell-Off and Oil Shock Hit Markets

Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp sell-off on 24 April 2026, with the Sensex falling 982.71 points to 76,681.29 and the Nifty closing 275.10 points lower at 23,897.95. This marks the third straight session of decline, as investors reacted to rising crude prices and heavy selling in IT stocks.

The biggest pressure came from the IT sector, where stocks like Infosys, HCL Tech, TCS, and Tech Mahindra led the fall after weak FY27 guidance and cautious brokerage commentary. The Nifty IT index plunged over 5%, making it the worst-performing sector of the day.

Another major reason behind the crash was Brent crude hovering around $107 per barrel, driven by escalating Iran–US tensions and concerns around the Strait of Hormuz. Along with this, continued FII selling and rupee weakness further dented market sentiment.

Despite the broader weakness, selective strength was seen in Coal India, Hindalco, Nestlé, SBI, and Trent, which managed to close in the green.

Do you think this sharp fall below 24,000 is a buying opportunity, or can Nifty slip further towards 23,500?
