B. Sairam Takes Charge as New Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India
B. Sairam has taken over as the new Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Coal India Limited (CIL), assuming charge at a time when the country’s largest coal producer is focused on meeting rising energy demand and improving operational efficiency. Sairam, who earlier served as the CMD of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a key subsidiary of Coal India, succeeds P. M. Prasad, who retired recently. His appointment follows government approval after his selection by the Public Enterprises Selection Board. With more than three decades of experience in the coal sector, Sairam brings strong expertise in mine operations, logistics, project planning and regulatory matters. Industry observers expect his leadership to prioritise higher production efficiency, smoother coal evacuation and stronger operational oversight across Coal India’s extensive mining network. Coal India, which accounts for the bulk of India’s domestic coal production, plays a crucial role in the country’s energy security. Under Sairam’s leadership, the company is expected to continue balancing production targets with sustainability and environmental considerations, in line with evolving energy policies. The leadership change comes at a crucial juncture as Coal India works to address logistical challenges, modernise mining practices and meet growing domestic demand. Analysts believe Sairam’s deep sector knowledge and operational experience will be key in steering the company through its strategic priorities in the coming period.
