Rohit Jain Appointed RBI Deputy Governor for Three-Year Term, to Replace T Rabi Sankar

The Central government has appointed Rohit Jain as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a period of three years. His appointment will take effect from May 3, 2026, according to a government notice.

Jain is currently serving as an Executive Director at the RBI. He will replace former Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar, who retired late last month. Reuters reported that Jain’s portfolio allocation has not yet been announced.

According to Business Standard, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Jain’s appointment following a notification from the Department of Personnel and Training. Jain has spent around three decades at the central bank, working in areas such as supervision, human resource management, banking, and other RBI functions.

As Executive Director, Jain handled the Department of Supervision, particularly areas related to risk, analytics, and vulnerability assessment. His experience in supervision and banking operations is expected to be important at a time when the RBI continues to focus on financial stability, regulation, and the digital payments ecosystem.

The RBI is expected to announce Jain’s specific departments shortly. Reports suggest he may take charge of some key areas earlier handled by T Rabi Sankar, including financial markets regulation, foreign exchange, and payment and settlement systems.
