India has summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi, M. Riaz Hamidullah, amid growing concerns over threats made against the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and inflammatory anti-India remarks by certain political figures in Bangladesh.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) apprised the envoy of serious security concerns relating to reports of extremist elements planning activities around the Indian diplomatic mission. India has stressed that Bangladesh must ensure the safety and security of its diplomatic premises and staff, in line with international norms.
The move follows controversial public statements by some leaders in Bangladesh, including threats involving India’s northeastern “Seven Sisters” states, which New Delhi has strongly rejected as misleading and provocative.
Separately, due to the deteriorating security situation in Dhaka, India has also temporarily shut its visa application centre in the Bangladesh capital.
This development highlights rising diplomatic tension between the two neighbours, with both sides raising concerns over statements and security issues in recent days.
