India–Oman to Sign Free Trade Agreement on December 18: Piyush Goyal
India and Oman are set to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on December 18, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has confirmed, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral economic relations between the two countries. The agreement comes after prolonged negotiations and is expected to give a major boost to trade, investment, and overall economic cooperation. According to the minister, the India–Oman FTA will focus on reducing or eliminating customs duties on a wide range of goods, making Indian exports more competitive in the Omani market while also facilitating easier access for Omani products in India. Key sectors likely to benefit include manufacturing, energy, food products, gems and jewellery, and services. The Union Cabinet has reportedly given its approval to the agreement ahead of its formal signing. The deal is also seen as strategically important as it aligns with India’s broader efforts to deepen trade ties with the Gulf and Middle East region. Oman is considered a crucial partner due to its geographic location and growing role as a regional trade and logistics hub. Experts believe the FTA will help increase bilateral trade volumes, encourage foreign investment, and create new business opportunities for companies in both countries. In the long term, the agreement is expected to strengthen India’s economic footprint in the region and support sustained growth through enhanced market access and cooperation.
