The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed all entities regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to shift to 1600-series telephone numbers for service and transactional calls to customers by February 15. The move is aimed at improving consumer trust, reducing spam calls, and preventing fraudulent and misleading communications.
The 1600 numbering series has been allocated specifically for use by entities in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector and government organisations. TRAI has already issued similar instructions to entities regulated by the RBI, SEBI and PFRDA, many of which have already adopted the new numbering system.
According to the regulator, the adoption of 1600-series numbers will make it easier for consumers to identify legitimate calls from insurance companies and help curb impersonation-based financial frauds.
