Trent Sensex Exit Watch: Hindalco or Shriram Finance May Enter in June Rejig

Tata Group retail stock Trent is in focus ahead of the upcoming BSE Sensex reshuffle announcement expected on May 22. According to Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research, Trent may be removed from the 30-stock benchmark index due to a decline in its free-float market capitalisation after recent underperformance.

If Trent exits the Sensex, Hindalco Industries or Shriram Finance could replace it. While Shriram Finance is said to be ahead on free-float market capitalisation, Hindalco may have a higher probability of inclusion because of sector representation within the index.

The rejig could also trigger major passive fund flows. Nuvama estimates that Trent may see around $257 million in passive outflows if it exits the Sensex. On the other hand, Hindalco could attract about $366 million in passive inflows, while Shriram Finance could see around $445 million if included.

The changes are expected to be implemented from June 19, meaning index-tracking funds and ETFs may rebalance their portfolios around that date. Such passive buying or selling can create short-term stock movement and higher trading volumes.

However, investors should remember that an index exit does not necessarily mean a business collapse. It is largely a technical index-related event. Trent’s long-term performance will still depend on its business growth, margins, retail expansion, and execution in brands like Zudio and Westside.
