TCS Freezes Promotion-Linked Assessments as AI Reshapes Workforce Strategy

India’s largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has reportedly paused its promotion-linked “Wings” assessment program as part of a broader AI-driven workforce restructuring strategy. The move comes at a time when the global IT industry is rapidly adapting to Generative AI and automation-led changes.

According to reports, TCS has temporarily frozen assessments connected to promotions and salary growth while the company redesigns its upskilling and talent evaluation framework. The company is now focusing more on AI readiness, digital capabilities, and future-oriented skill development rather than traditional performance metrics.

The “Wings” program was introduced to encourage employees to upgrade technical skills and improve career growth opportunities. However, with AI changing the nature of software development and IT services, companies are now reassessing how employees should be trained and evaluated in the future.

Reports suggest the IT industry is witnessing a larger workforce reset where repetitive coding and low-end technology tasks are increasingly being automated by AI tools. As a result, companies are shifting focus toward advanced digital skills, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, AI integration, and consulting-based roles.

Experts believe this transition may create short-term uncertainty for employees, but it could also open new opportunities for professionals who quickly adapt to AI-led technologies and next-generation digital services.

Do you think AI will create more opportunities for IT employees in the future, or reduce traditional tech jobs permanently?
