PhonePe & Google Pay Lose UPI Dominance! Combined Market Share Falls Below 80% for First Time

India's UPI ecosystem is witnessing a major shift. For the first time, the combined market share of PhonePe and Google Pay has fallen below 80%, dropping to around 79% in May 2026.

The decline suggests that smaller UPI players such as Navi, super.money, CRED and others are gradually gaining users and transactions. While PhonePe and Google Pay still dominate the market, competition is becoming stronger than before.

This trend is important because regulators have long been concerned about excessive concentration in the UPI ecosystem. A broader distribution of market share could make the digital payments landscape more competitive and resilient.

🤔 Will new UPI apps be able to seriously challenge PhonePe and Google Pay in the coming years?
