Shares of IDFC First Bank plunged nearly 20% at market open, hitting the lower circuit after the bank disclosed a ₹590 crore fraud at its Chandigarh branch.
The private sector lender informed exchanges that the suspected fraud involved certain employees and transactions linked to government-related accounts. Following the discovery, the bank has suspended four employees and initiated an internal investigation. A formal complaint has also been lodged with law enforcement authorities.
According to the bank, the issue came to light after a Haryana government department requested the closure and transfer of its account to another bank. During the reconciliation process, discrepancies were detected between recorded balances and actual funds, prompting a deeper probe.
The bank clarified that the fraud appears to be isolated to specific accounts at the Chandigarh branch and does not impact other customer accounts. It has appointed an independent forensic audit agency to conduct a detailed examination and assess accountability.
Despite the incident, the bank stated that it remains well-capitalized and financially stable, emphasizing that necessary corrective and legal actions are underway.
Investor sentiment, however, turned sharply negative following the disclosure, triggering heavy selling pressure in early trade. Market analysts suggest that while the immediate reaction reflects concerns over governance and internal controls, the long-term impact will depend on the outcome of the investigation and recovery efforts.
Further updates are expected as the forensic audit progresses.
IDFC First Bank ke shares market open hote hi lagbhag 20% tak gir gaye aur lower circuit tak pahunch gaye, jab bank ne Chandigarh branch me ₹590 crore ke fraud ka disclosure kiya.
Bank ke exchange filing ke mutabik, yeh suspected fraud kuch employees aur government-linked accounts se judi transactions se sambandhit hai. Case saamne aate hi bank ne chaar employees ko suspend kar diya hai aur internal investigation shuru kar di hai. Saath hi, law enforcement authorities ke paas official complaint bhi file ki gayi hai.
Fraud ka pata tab chala jab Haryana government ke ek department ne apna account band karke dusre bank me transfer karne ki request di. Reconciliation process ke dauran recorded balance aur actual funds me discrepancy saamne aayi, jiske baad detailed probe shuru ki gayi.
Bank ne clarify kiya hai ki yeh issue sirf Chandigarh branch ke kuch specific accounts tak seemit hai aur dusre customers par iska koi direct impact nahi hai. Saath hi, ek independent forensic audit agency appoint ki gayi hai jo poore matter ki detailed jaanch karegi.
Halanki bank ne kaha hai ki wo financially well-capitalised hai aur stability bani hui hai, lekin fraud ki khabar ke baad investor sentiment par negative asar pada aur share me heavy selling dekhne ko mili.
Market experts ka kehna hai ki short-term me volatility reh sakti hai, aur long-term impact investigation ke outcome aur recovery process par depend karega.
