IDFC First Bank Adds Extra Security Layer for Cheque Clearances After Fraud Incident

IDFC First Bank Adds Extra Security Layer for Cheque Clearances After Fraud Incident
IDFC First Bank has introduced an additional layer of security for cheque clearances and high-value transactions following a recent fraud incident linked to government accounts. The move aims to strengthen internal controls and prevent unauthorized fund transfers. Under the new protocol, whenever a cheque or large transaction is initiated, the bank will send an email notification to the registered email ID of the account holder. The transaction will be processed only after the bank receives explicit confirmation from that email address. The new verification system will initially apply to government, institutional and banking accounts where large fund movements are common. This additional step is designed to ensure that account holders directly confirm transactions before funds are released. The decision comes after a suspected fraud of about ₹590 crore linked to forged cheque transactions at the bank’s Chandigarh branch earlier this year, which triggered investigations and raised concerns about transaction controls. By adding this confirmation layer, the bank aims to rebuild trust, strengthen fraud prevention systems, and improve the safety of high-value transactions.
