Medicine prices in India may increase significantly after the cost of key pharmaceutical ingredients surged nearly 30% in the past two weeks, according to industry sources. The spike is largely linked to shipping disruptions and container shortages triggered by the ongoing Iran-related geopolitical tensions.
Many Indian drug manufacturers depend heavily on China for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and other raw materials. However, shortages of container vessels have slowed the movement of these essential inputs, affecting supply chains and raising production costs for pharmaceutical companies.
Industry officials say importers are already passing higher costs to large pharmaceutical companies, as prices of APIs and solvents have risen sharply. In some cases, raw materials like glycerine have jumped over 60%, while paracetamol prices have increased around 26% since December.
Experts warn that if the geopolitical tensions continue, shipping routes could remain disrupted, pushing logistics costs even higher and eventually impacting the availability and pricing of essential medicines in India. The pharmaceutical industry has urged regulators to allow temporary price increases to offset the sudden surge in input costs.
India mein medicines ki prices jaldi badh sakti hain, kyunki pharmaceutical industry ke raw materials aur APIs ki cost lagbhag 30% tak badh gayi hai. Yeh surge mainly Iran war ke baad shipping disruption aur container shortage ki wajah se hua hai.
Indian pharma companies kaafi had tak China se aane wale APIs aur raw materials par depend karti hain. Lekin container ships ki kami ke karan in raw materials ka supply slow ho gaya hai, jisse production cost badh rahi hai.
Industry experts ke mutabik importers ab yeh extra cost pharma companies par pass kar rahe hain. Kuch key raw materials jaise glycerine ki price 60% tak badh gayi hai, jabki paracetamol ki price bhi lagbhag 26% increase ho chuki hai.
Agar Middle East tension aur shipping disruption zyada time tak chalta raha to logistics cost aur badh sakti hai. Isse India mein essential medicines ki availability aur prices dono par impact pad sakta hai. Pharma industry ne government se request ki hai ki exceptional situation mein drug prices badhane ki permission di jaye.
