HDFC Bank Crash Sparks Concern: ₹1 Lakh Crore Wiped Out Amid Trust & FII Exit Fears

HDFC Bank Crash Sparks Concern: ₹1 Lakh Crore Wiped Out Amid Trust & FII Exit Fears

India’s leading private lender, HDFC Bank, witnessed a massive market value erosion of nearly ₹1 lakh crore in a single day, triggering panic among investors. The fall came after the sudden resignation of the bank’s chairman, who cited “ethical misalignment” without giving detailed reasons — raising serious concerns about internal governance.

Although no official fraud or scam has been confirmed, the lack of clarity created uncertainty in the market. This was further intensified by concerns around AT1 bonds, which are high-risk instruments that can potentially be written off during crises, as seen in the Credit Suisse case.

Adding to the pressure, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) pulled out nearly ₹35,000 crore, signaling declining global confidence. The bank is also facing challenges post its merger with HDFC Ltd, which has impacted margins due to rising funding costs and slower deposit growth.

Despite these concerns, domestic mutual funds continue to show confidence, buying heavily — indicating a divide between global and local investor sentiment.

Do you think this fall in HDFC Bank is a warning sign or a long-term buying opportunity?
