JP Morgan Turns Bearish on India, Flags Earnings Risks and Valuation Pressure

Global brokerage JP Morgan has turned cautious on Indian equities, downgrading its stance to neutral and warning that earnings risks are rising. The brokerage cited high valuations, oil-led inflation risks, weak rupee, and slower earnings growth as key concerns for the market.

JP Morgan has kept its 2026 Nifty target at 27,000, which still implies upside from current levels, but the tone has clearly become more defensive. The brokerage also warned that in a bear-case scenario, Nifty could fall to 20,500, especially if crude oil prices remain elevated and global geopolitical tensions intensify.

Another major concern highlighted was India’s limited exposure to next-gen themes like AI, semiconductors, robotics, and data centers, compared to peers like Taiwan and Korea. Along with this, heavy IPO/QIP activity and promoter stake sales are seen as equity dilution risks, which may cap upside in the near term.

Despite the cautious view, JP Morgan remains constructive on sectors such as financials, defence, power, materials, and consumer discretionary, while staying underweight on IT and pharma.

Do you think this bearish call is a warning sign for Indian markets, or just another dip-buying opportunity?
