Skyroot Becomes India’s First Space-Tech Unicorn After $60 Million Funding Led by Google’s Early Backer

India’s private space sector has achieved a major milestone as Skyroot Aerospace became the country’s first space-tech unicorn after raising $60 million in fresh funding.

The funding round was led by Ram Shriram’s Sherpalo Ventures along with global investors like GIC and BlackRock. Notably, Ram Shriram is known as one of Google’s earliest investors, making this investment a huge confidence boost for India’s growing space ecosystem.

With this round, Skyroot’s valuation crossed $1 billion, officially entering the unicorn club. The Hyderabad-based startup is currently preparing for the launch of Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital rocket.

Skyroot had already created history in 2022 by launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately built rocket to reach space. The company now plans to use the fresh capital to increase launch frequency, scale manufacturing, and develop next-generation launch vehicles like Vikram-2.

This development is being seen as a turning point for India’s private space industry, signaling rising global investor confidence in Indian deep-tech and aerospace startups.

Do you think India’s private space startups can compete with global giants like SpaceX in the future?
