Skyroot Aerospace Becomes India’s First Space-Tech Unicorn After $60 Million Funding Boost

India’s private space industry has entered a historic phase as Skyroot Aerospace

became the country’s first space-tech unicorn after raising nearly $60 million in fresh funding.

The funding round was led by Ram Shriram’s Sherpalo Ventures along with major global investors such as GIC and funds managed by BlackRock. Ram Shriram, famously known as one of Google’s earliest investors, will also join Skyroot’s board after this investment.

With this latest round, Skyroot’s valuation crossed $1.1 billion, officially making it India’s first unicorn in the private space-tech sector. The Hyderabad-based startup is now preparing for the launch of Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital rocket.

Skyroot had already made history in 2022 by successfully launching Vikram-S, the first privately built Indian rocket to reach space. The company now plans to use the fresh funds to scale manufacturing, increase launch frequency, and accelerate development of next-generation rockets like Vikram-2.

Experts believe this milestone reflects growing global confidence in India’s private space ecosystem and could open the door for more investments into Indian deep-tech and aerospace startups.

Do you think India’s private space startups can compete with global giants like SpaceX in the next 10 years?
