Sensex Ends Flat After Volatile Session; Auto Stocks Shine While IT Drags Market

Indian stock markets witnessed a highly volatile trading session on May 7, 2026, with the Sensex and Nifty ending mostly flat after sharp swings throughout the day. (moneycontrol.com)

The Sensex traded in a wide range during the session, as investors balanced optimism around a possible US-Iran peace agreement against concerns over foreign investor selling and global uncertainty. (reuters.com)

Auto stocks emerged as the biggest gainers, with the Nifty Auto index rising nearly 2%. Stocks like Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra, and HDFC Life supported the market after strong earnings and positive sector sentiment.

On the other hand, IT and FMCG stocks remained under pressure. Heavyweights like TCS, HUL, and Tech Mahindra dragged the Nifty lower amid profit booking and weak sector momentum.

Broader markets continued to outperform benchmark indices, with midcap and smallcap stocks witnessing strong buying interest. Defence and energy-related stocks also saw momentum during the session.

One of the biggest market triggers was news around the Strait of Hormuz, where reports suggested progress in US-Iran discussions regarding easing tensions in the region. This led to a temporary 500-point spike in the Sensex within minutes during intraday trade.

However, markets later gave up most gains due to continued FII outflows and cautious investor sentiment. Analysts believe crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, and upcoming global economic data will remain key drivers for market direction in the coming sessions.

Do you think the market is preparing for a fresh breakout, or is this volatility a sign of another correction ahead?
