India Inc on “War Footing”! PM Modi’s Appeal Triggers Emergency Economic Measures

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce fuel consumption and avoid unnecessary imports, both the Indian government and major companies are now preparing to operate on a “war footing” amid rising Middle East tensions.

Reports suggest the government is planning urgent consultations with industry leaders to manage risks linked to crude oil prices, foreign exchange reserves, energy security, and supply chain disruptions. The focus is on protecting India’s economy from the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Several business leaders have supported the PM’s message. Industry groups are encouraging companies to reduce unnecessary foreign spending, review work-from-home policies to save fuel, and focus more on domestic investment and renewable energy.

According to reports, jewellery stocks also fell sharply after PM Modi urged citizens to avoid buying gold for a year to help conserve foreign exchange reserves. However, government officials later clarified that there is currently no proposal to increase gold or silver import duties.

Experts believe the government’s strategy is aimed at “economic self-defence” — reducing pressure on imports, conserving fuel, and preparing businesses for a prolonged period of global uncertainty.

Do you think India should temporarily reduce luxury imports and foreign spending to protect the economy during global crises?
