Delhi Govt Makes 2-Day Work From Home Mandatory for Employees Amid Fuel-Saving Push

The Delhi government has announced a mandatory two-day work-from-home policy for government employees as part of a major fuel-saving and austerity campaign. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to reduce fuel consumption and unnecessary travel amid rising global energy concerns.

Under the new policy, government departments in Delhi will implement work-from-home for two days every week. The government has also issued an advisory to private companies, especially IT firms, startups, BPOs, and corporate offices, encouraging them to adopt hybrid work models to reduce daily commuting and fuel usage.

The announcement is part of a larger campaign called “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdaan,” which focuses on reducing petrol and diesel consumption during a period of rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Additional measures include a 20% cut in official travel expenses, increased online meetings, and restrictions on purchasing new petrol or diesel government vehicles.

Officials believe the policy could help reduce traffic congestion, lower fuel imports, and support economic stability. However, the government clarified that the advisory for private firms is currently not mandatory, although sectors with large office-based workforces are expected to come under pressure to cooperate.

The move has triggered widespread debate across India, with some people welcoming the return of hybrid work culture while others fear it may signal deeper economic and energy-related concerns.

Do you think large-scale work-from-home policies can genuinely help India save fuel and reduce economic pressure, or is this only a temporary solution?
