AI Boom Sparks Massive Tensions at Samsung! 45,000 Workers May Go on Strike

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics is facing one of the biggest labour crises in its history as more than 45,000 workers prepare for a possible large-scale strike amid the global AI boom. The growing conflict has created deep divisions inside the company over bonuses, salaries, and profit sharing linked to the explosive growth of AI chips and semiconductor demand.

According to reports, workers from Samsung’s semiconductor division are demanding a larger share of profits generated from the company’s booming AI-related business. Employees argue that while Samsung is benefiting massively from the global AI race, worker compensation and bonus structures remain unfair compared to rivals like SK Hynix.

The union is reportedly demanding the removal of bonus caps and wants 15% of Samsung’s annual operating profit to be allocated toward employee bonuses. Samsung management has resisted these demands, warning that significantly higher labour costs could affect future investments and competitiveness.

The situation has become more serious because Samsung plays a critical role in the global semiconductor and AI supply chain. The company manufactures advanced memory chips and AI hardware used by major global technology firms including Nvidia, Tesla, and other AI infrastructure companies. Experts warn that a prolonged strike could disrupt global chip production and impact the AI industry worldwide.

Analysts say the conflict also highlights a larger issue within the tech industry — as AI profits rise rapidly, employees increasingly want a bigger share of the financial gains. At the same time, companies are trying to balance rising labour costs, global competition, and massive investments needed for AI infrastructure expansion.

South Korea’s government has reportedly urged both sides to continue negotiations and avoid a strike because semiconductors are a major pillar of the country’s economy and exports.

Do you think employees working in AI and semiconductor companies deserve a larger share of profits generated from the global AI boom?
