HDFC Bank Introduces 2-Day Work From Home For Select Employees Amid Fuel Saving Push

India’s largest private lender, HDFC Bank, has reportedly introduced a temporary two-day work-from-home (WFH) policy for employees working in business and corporate enabling functions. The arrangement has come into effect immediately and is expected to remain in place for the next 30 days before being reviewed again.

The policy is mainly applicable to departments like IT, finance, operations, risk, and compliance, while branch staff and customer-facing employees are expected to continue working from office locations. Reports suggest the move is aligned with the broader national push towards reducing fuel consumption and transportation costs amid rising global crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also encouraged companies and citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures like virtual meetings, carpooling, and remote work wherever possible. Several state authorities and companies are now exploring hybrid work arrangements as a way to reduce commuting-related fuel usage.

Experts believe this step could improve employee flexibility and work-life balance while also helping companies lower operational pressure during a period of rising energy costs. However, many industry watchers are also discussing whether more banks and corporate firms may now follow a similar hybrid work model.

Do you think hybrid work culture will become permanent in India’s banking and corporate sector after this move?
